Reach the highest point and see the land unfold beneath you.
This guided hike takes you to the summit of Alto da Pedrada (1416m), the highest point in the district of Viana do Castelo. A true mountain experience, this route combines natural beauty, physical challenge and a deep sense of remoteness.
The trail unfolds through a mix of terrain — approximately 50% on defined paths and 50% in mountain conditions, where navigation, terrain reading and movement become part of the experience. This is not just a walk, but a journey into the raw character of the Serra.
On clear days, the reward at the top is unforgettable: sweeping views that stretch all the way to the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Lima River.
Along the way, you’ll cross high-altitude shepherd shelters and traditional mountain structures, offering a glimpse into the lives once lived in these remote landscapes. The mountain is alive — and it’s very likely you’ll encounter wildlife such as free-roaming Garrano horses and the iconic Cachena cows, moving freely across the highlands.
Midway through the experience, you’ll stop at one of these mountain shelters for a picnic-style lunch, a simple and authentic moment to rest, share and take in the surroundings.
